Why Switzerland sits at the centre of commodity trading
A landlocked country without raw materials, and one of the most important locations for the global commodity industry.
Switzerland has no sea coast and, as the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO) puts it, lacks commercially exploitable natural resources of its own. Yet the federal government describes the country as one of the most important locations for the international raw material industry.
The scale, in official terms
According to SECO, it is estimated that more than half of the world’s palm oil, coffee, iron and copper are traded by companies in Switzerland, and significant quantities of gold pass through the country for refining, watchmaking and storage. Trading companies based in Switzerland handle agricultural commodities as well as fuels and minerals; some have operated for centuries.
Why here
SECO names the reasons: a long tradition in the sector; stable political, economic and legal institutions; internationally competitive corporate taxation; forward-looking regulation; a highly skilled workforce and high quality of life; an efficient financial system; and a high concentration of leading companies in freight forwarding, trade finance, inspection and testing of goods.
Trading, shipping, finance and inspection in close proximity: this is the ecosystem in which commercial maritime decisions are made.
Competition and responsibility
The position is not a given. SECO lists strong international competition from Singapore, the United Arab Emirates, Hong Kong, the United States, the United Kingdom, India and the Netherlands. The Federal Department of Foreign Affairs, the Federal Department of Finance and the Federal Department of Economic Affairs, Education and Research coordinate commodities policy through an Interdepartmental Platform on Commodities, covering competitiveness, integrity and sustainability.
The industry voice
SUISSENÉGOCE, the Swiss Commodity Trading Association, represents companies engaged in commodity trading, shipping, trade finance, insurance, legal services and related sectors.
Why it matters for KOLOSSI
KOLOSSI is based in the Canton of Zug. Working from Switzerland means working in the time zone, the language and the regulatory culture of a large part of the commodity trade, close to the people who take cargo decisions.
